Organic Raw Dog Food ? Why You Should Choose Organic For Your Dog
Despite the popularity of the raw dog food diet, a lot of people are still wary of putting their dogs on this type of diet. The primary concern of most owners is the threat of bacterial contamination. Raw meat can be susceptible to contamination and harboring parasites. Plants and fruits on the other hand can carry pesticide residue.
Contamination is a real threat. After all, we don’t want to unintentionally make our dogs ill in the course of switching our dogs over to this healthier diet. In order to make raw feeding successful, we need to put in place safeguards to keep this danger at bay.
One of the best ways to avoid contamination is to choose organic raw dog food. There are many advantages to food that is labeled organic. Here are just some of them:
Free of antibiotics and artificial growth hormones. Meats that are labeled organic imply that the livestock has been raised in an environment where they are not subjected to a lot of chemicals.
Feed not made from animal parts. Farms who raise animals organically don’t give feeds that are made from animal parts. This helps keep cows from developing mad cow disease.
Free of chemical pesticides. Produce that are organic means they are grown without the use of chemical pesticides. Pesticides can leave residue on the fruits and vegetables and this poses health risks to humans and animals alike.
Aside from the benefit to dogs – and humans – who consume organic food, organic farming practices are also better for the environment. Over the long term, it is a more sustainable and humane process of growing our food.
Aside from feeding organic raw dog food, other ways of minimizing the risk of contamination include the proper handling and storage of food. This will take a bit of work and planning on your end. First of all, you have to know the proper ways of keeping various kinds of food. Different kinds of food have different shelf lives and different storage requirements.
Meat has to be stored in a freezer. Once thawed, it should be consumed and should not be placed back into the freezer. Also, it should not be left exposed at room temperature for a long time.
A good way to manage your store of raw meat is to pack them in portions before freezing them. This gives you a lot of benefits. First of all, it keeps you from thawing meat that you won’t be able to use. And second, packing them in portions can tell you exactly how many days you have before you run out of food for your dog. Finally, it makes meal times much more stress-free because you simply have to get a portion to thaw and serve your dog. You don’t have to think about it too much.
Fruits and vegetables can be kept in a chiller to extend their shelf lives. But it is always best to serve them immediately after you got them, because they spoil much quicker.
When serving the food to your dog, always make sure you don’t leave the food out for too long. Give your dog 15 to 20 minutes to finish his food. Whatever is left after that should be disposed of. This way, you avoid having your dog accidently eating food that’s already contaminated.
